PE & Sport
What is Physical Education?
PE is the planned, progressive learning that takes place in school curriculum timetabled time, and which is delivered to all pupils. This involves both ‘learning to move’ and ‘moving to learn.’ The context for the learning is physical activity, with children experiencing a broad range of activities, including sport and dance.
‘The Association for PE’
Intent
At Mossley, we provide a high-quality physical education, school sport and physical activity (PESSPA) curriculum that promotes a diverse variety of sports and inspires our children find a lifelong love for adopting an active lifestyle, both now, and throughout their lives. PE at Mossley adheres to the National Curriculum framework and aims to provide continuity of learning experience by building on and embedding the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2. With pupils becoming more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and applying them across different sports and physical activities, in order to excel,
We aim to maximise the development of both our pupils’ ability and achievement through captivating lessons, extensive extra-curricular opportunities, intra-school competitions and community based inter-school competitions.
We aim to incorporate our core British Values into sport promoting: democracy, rule of law, individual liberty and respect & tolerance. This enables us to embed cooperation, resilience, respect, positive well-being and aid social skills that are key in children fulfilling life both through their school years and life beyond school.
Implementation
We use the Complete PE scheme to support the planning and teaching of our PE curriculum at Mossley, which caters for EYFS through to KS2. Complete PE helps us to build a sequenced, scheduled overview that clearly progresses building upon prior learning through the key stages and year groups. For our OAA (Outdoor Adventurous Activities) unit, we us cross-curricular orienteering scheme of work to ensure that children are exposed to problem-solving and teambuilding activities in an outdoor setting.
Through Mossley’s extra-curricular provision, we provide opportunities for children to try new activities, thereby enabling all children to find a sport/activity that they love. By utilising our extensive club links, children will be encouraged to join clubs outside of school, forming new relationships with others and developing a sense of worth, purpose and personal identity from within the school setting, pursuing this amongst the wider community.
All of our children have two hours of PE timetabled each week and it is taught by our two PE teachers. Mr Dodds has over 25 years of professional football experience, playing for the likes of Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town and Leicester City. Mr Dodds has gained vast experience in an array of Physical Activity and he brings great potential for the children to look up to during their time at Mossley. Similarly, Miss Smith has over 5 years of teaching in the dance sector, and being involved in many different performing opportunities since a
young age. Through her love of dancing and various other sports such as netball, Miss Smith can bring the children’s visions to life through the PE curriculum.
EYFS to KS1
The EYFS and KS1 PE curriculum at Mossley Primary School has been designed to ensure children entering EYFS leave KS1 with a secure ability to use fundamental movement skills, therefore becoming increasingly competent and confident in applying these fundamentals to a range of activities and sport specific activities. The children are taught to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, developing balance, agility and co-ordination. As well as these skills, children in years 1 and 2 are taught a unit of OAA to encourage team work and problem-solving.
KS2
As children move into KS2, the children build upon their fundamental skills knowledge by implementing these core skills into various sports. In KS2, the children cover the following units: football, tag rugby, games for understanding, outdoor adventurous activities, dance, hockey, gymnastics, basketball, netball, athletics, striking & fielding and nets-sports. To ensure further embedding of rules and knowledge of different sports, children in KS2 are given opportunities to officiate and coach their peers throughout lessons.
Impact
The children at Mossley complete each year and therefore key stage with a high proficiency in each aspect of PE. Children are aware of the link between physical activity and good mental health and understand it’s significance as part of a healthy lifestyle.
The school achieves well in the vast majority of sporting activities held across our local sporting partnership and achieved the School Games Mark at Gold level in 2022-23 in recognition of its PE provision and children’s access to not only competitive sports, but in participation events for children trying new sports for the first time and SEND ability days.
How we monitor PE
The monitoring, assessment and recording of children’s achievements in PE is essential for everyone's continued success and the maintenance of a progressive, continuous and high-quality curriculum throughout Mossley. Our PE teachers monitor, assess and record children’s achievements and identify any misconceptions, noting any adaptions that are needed for the next lesson.
Mr Johnson (PE lead) constantly monitors the scheme and teaching of PE through consultation with the Senior Leadership Team, staff and observation of lessons on learning walks.
Sports Premium
Mossley CE Primary School recognises the significance of Physical Education in the health and well-being of its children. PE is extremely important to us at Mossley and this is evident throughout our curriculum and our extra-curricular activities. We feel that it promotes concentration, attitude and achievement.
The Sports Premium funding allows us to develop the delivery of core physical skills to all of the children at Mossley. The impact of the funding is evident in our success in sporting competitions, year on year.
Extra-curricular Participation
As a school, we are passionate about participation and always look to provide as many opportunities as possible for our pupils. Depending on the criteria of competitions that we are eligible to enter, Mossley will always enter the maximum number of teams available. When this is limited to one team, we will look to arrange further events to accommodate our pupils’ desire to participate, often with other large local primary schools. We will always enter our pupils into extra events, including those arranged for SEND pupils through our local School Games Organiser (SGO) based at Congleton High School.
Our PE Teachers
Through the use of 2 fantastic PE teachers, we aim to teach an inclusive and enjoyable PE curriculum. Mr Dodds has over 25 years of professional football experience, playing for the likes of Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town and Leicester City. Mr Dodds has gained vast experience in an array of Physical Activity and he brings great potential for the children to look up to during their time at Mossley. Similarly, Miss Smith has over 5 years of teaching in the dance sector, and being involved in many different performing opportunities since a young age. Through her love of Dancing and various other sports such as Netball Miss Smith can bring the childrens visions to life through the PE curriculum.
"PE as a whole teaches children everyday skills that they can apply not only in PE but in other subjects too. It allows a child to gain social skills through the inclusive nature of the subject. It teaches the children resillience through the idea of not giving up and giving things a go even if they do not find it easy. PE to us gives children the confidence boost and helps to work on their self-esteem. We see children progress every single lesson and we love encouraging children to step out of their comfort zone and to try new things. Seeing pupils thrive in our lessons is what we love about PE." Mr Dodds and Miss Smith- Mossley PE Teachers.
