Year 5 Visit Congleton Museum, by Mrs Knibbs

The children had a brilliant time at Congleton Museum. They were able to handle many different artefacts such as a death penny belonging to Harry Horton, war medals and a screw picket. They will be writing information leaflets about what they have learnt and we will be sending these to the museum when they are finished to be displayed and used for visitors.
Year 5&6 Football Datastar Cup, by Mrs Knibbs

The boys competed against other local primary school in the Datastar cup competition. They showed amazing team work and were incredible where one team made it in to the final.

The children took part in the Bebras coding competition at Eaton Bank, hosted by Mark Mills. They were challenged to solve different coding problems within limited time. The children were amazing and demonstrated a great ability to work together and independently under pressure.

The children have been learing all about different religious ceremonies and as part of this they decided that they would like to create Diwali lamps. They were amazing and really enjoyed working alongside our volunteers who came to help.

The children have been having great fun during science club. They have learnt all about chromatography, learnt how to light bunsen burners and saw what happens when we burn copper and magnesium.
School Safety Council out and about, by Mrs Knibbs

This morning our safety council was out and about on the local roads around school. They were observing road users and encouraging safety awareness and considerate driving. Thank you for your time, what great council members you are.

The children have been nominated to undertake the very important role of safety council members. As part of their role they will monitor road safety around the school area; liaise with our school safe guarding lead and assist with the development of safeguarding plans.
Estimating fun in Year 5., by Miss Young

The children have been using their estimating skills this morning to find a rough answer to some addition calculations. They have learnt when it would be appropriate to use estimating eg: in the super market. They have also been introduced to the ‘approximately equal to’ symbol and have been using it in their practical maths lesson today.

Year 5 were in outrage today after receiving a 'letter' from the Department of Education!
The children received a ‘letter’ as a stimulus for their new English unit on newspaper reports. The letter stated that the Department for Education are proposing that UKS2 children lose their morning break and stay at school until 4pm in preparation for their SATs.
The children were outraged at the letter and could not quite believe it! They have used it as a basis to write some fantastic examples of direct and indirect speech, showing what the staff thought about the news.
They are now in the process of using it to write their very own newspaper report. The children have already come up with some fantastic headlines and opening paragraphs and we can’t wait to see their finished product!

The team had a great start to the football league winning both of their games 10-1 and 4-0. It is set to be a super year for football.
Crime And Consequences, by Miss Young

STOP THIEF!
The children had a brilliant time during their ‘Crime and Consequences’ workshop. They started the day by playing a game of Stop Thief! They had to pick another child to follow and do so without being spotted. They had lots of fun and some children were extremely good at keeping a poker face!
The children then learnt all about crimes and the punishments given during the Roman times. They learnt how a verdict was reached and discussed how biased this was. The children then looked at crimes and consequences from the Anglo-Saxons. This linked with lots of the topic work we have done in school and the children enjoyed playing the jury in court!
Next, they moved on to learning about the Tudor times. They learnt all about tithings and wergilds and acted out a scene in a Tudor court. When they reached the Victorian times, the children learnt about the different crimes committed and created freeze frames to portray these for their peers. They had lots of fun trying to spot the different crimes in the street scene freeze frames.
The children finished the day with an interactive game of hangman. They revisited words that they had learnt throughout the workshop such as magistrate, justice and torture. Lots of fun was had by all!

Your teachers do not turn up for school…what do you think should happen?
The children created their own set of rules including things such as; All teachers should incur a £50 fine, The eldest boy and girl in the school should be in charge and everyone should leave and enter assembly in an orderly fashion.
We talked about how this is following the Rule of Law and we also discussed the importance of democracy and having the right to make that vote of law.

Tudor Music
The children have had lots of fun learning about music in the Tudor times in our music lessons. They have matched pictures to the names of their instruments and have compared the pictures to instruments that we use today. The children have also learnt about the piece of music, Greensleeves. Can your child tell you who legend says wrote Greensleeves?
They had lots of fun listening to the song and writing about how it made them feel and the importance of music in Tudor times. We finished off the day with some fantastic dancing! The children learnt about when Greensleeves would have typically been played and they learnt a little bit of Tudor style dancing with a partner! They had lots and lots of fun!

Year 5 took advantage of the beautiful weather today and enjoyed playing the tradition French game of “boules” during their French lesson. Some brilliant skills were shown and a highly competitive and friendly atmosphere was seen throughout! Well done!

Year 5 worked together in pairs to find out information about “la fête du citron”, a festival which happens each year in the town of Menton in the south of France. Information was written on small cards around the classroom and they took it in turns to relay information to each other in order to find out as much about the event as possible. Pupils are now creating posters to illustrate the main facts they have discovered. Great team work from everyone!

French pen pal project gets underway! , by Mrs Webb

Year 5 and 6 pupils have been working hard to produce letters and spoken presentations to introduce themselves to their new pen pals. Madame Webb has set up a link project for years 4, 5 and 6 with Lacey Green Primary Academy in Wilmslow and pupils will be communicating with each other entirely in French over the year! This week pupils were very excited to receive their first letters from their pen friends and managed to understand most of the information! Bonne chance!

Pupils had fun getting to grips with puzzles in French! They had to match up familiar questions and answers to the English equivalents and see which team was the fastest. Well done for fantastic team work from everyone!

This week, the children have been learning about being safe online. We have learnt how old you should be to use certain social networks, how to create a strong password, we have written and signed a digital pledge, how to deal with spam and how photographs can be edited online and how this doesn't always reflect reality.
